Why Adopt a Rescue Dog?
Colorado ranks among the top states for pet ownership — and for good reason. Our active lifestyle, dog-friendly trails, and welcoming communities make it one of the best places in the country to share your life with a dog. When you adopt through a rescue organization like Doggy Dog World Rescue, you're not just gaining a companion. You're saving a life.
Since founding Doggy Dog World Rescue in Littleton in 2008, our team has placed hundreds of dogs into loving forever homes across the Denver metro area. Along the way, we've learned what makes adoptions succeed — and what first-time adopters wish they'd known.
Step 1: Honestly Assess Your Lifestyle
The most common reason adoptions don't work out is a mismatch between the dog's energy level and the family's actual lifestyle — not their ideal lifestyle. Before you fall in love with a photo online, answer these questions honestly:
- How many hours per day will the dog be alone?
- Do you have a yard, or will all exercise happen on walks?
- Do you have other pets or young children?
- Are you an active hiker, or do you prefer quiet evenings at home?
- Can you commit to basic training and consistent structure?
Your answers should guide which dog you consider, not the other way around.
Step 2: Take a Match Quiz
At Doggy Dog World Rescue, we've built a free lifestyle match quiz that takes about 5 minutes. It analyzes your living situation, activity level, experience with dogs, and household composition to recommend dogs whose temperament and needs align with your life. Take the quiz here.
Step 3: Browse Adoptable Dogs
Our foster-based model means every dog in our program lives in a real home — not a shelter kennel. That means our foster families can tell you exactly how each dog behaves: how they act around strangers, whether they resource-guard, if they know basic commands, and what their daily routine looks like. This transparency helps you make a confident, informed decision.
You can browse all our available dogs here or find us on Petfinder.
Step 4: Submit an Application
When you find a dog you're interested in, submit an adoption inquiry through our website. Our team reviews every application personally. We look at your living situation, veterinary references, and experience — but we're not looking for perfection. We're looking for commitment and fit.
Most applicants hear back within 48 hours.
Step 5: Meet-and-Greet
Before any adoption is finalized, we arrange a meet-and-greet between you, your household members (including other pets), and the dog. This is your chance to see how the dog responds to your energy and environment. Our coordinators attend every meet to help facilitate a smooth introduction.
Step 6: Adoption Day
Once everyone is confident it's a great match, we finalize the adoption. Colorado rescues are required to have all dogs spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before placement. Every dog adopted through Doggy Dog World Rescue also comes with a free session with our certified training partner — because the first weeks home set the foundation for years of success.
What Happens After Adoption?
Our relationship with adopters doesn't end at adoption day. We're available for questions, training support referrals, and help if challenges arise. We'd rather help you through a rough patch than have a dog returned.
